Pandemic Sanity

MADE BY: Marylee Drake

QUILTED BY:  Precision Quiltworks

About the time we went into lock-down I wanted to make a new quilt with my Kaffe Fasset fabric collection. I found this pattern by GE Designs when I stumbled on a TV show featuring "Weekend Quilt Alongs". I didn't do the quilt along but I fell in love with this pattern. Lots of people were making it and their work was very inspirational. It was great fun to construct and it turned out beautifully. It has a place of honor on my bed.

This quilt was started at a mystery retreat with Linda Ballard. I expanded the layout for a queen size for my guest bedroom. Lin Squires’ quilting makes this quilt sing.

Wild Plum Meets Jamestown

MADE BY: Ronda Kucala

QUILTED BY:  Beth Handy

This quilt was 10 years in the making. The 12 pieced blocks were made several years ago as a BOM. The Log Cabin Blocks were made recently. The combination of the two blocks gives the quilt an antique look. Beth Handy did a fantastic job on the quilting using the flower from the center block of the Log Cabin Blocks. Marti Mitchell pattern "Ramblin' Rose Meets Jamestown."

QUILTED BY:  John and Karla Rogers

I worked on this quilt over several months, simplifying the pattern so it could be quickly machine pieced. The center square for each 2" block was fussy cut...just to make it more interesting to work on. Taken from Pam Buda's "Circa 1880's Club".

I saved red scraps in a drawer and planned to make this American Jane quilt. When I found the background print at Ben Franklins I started making 9 patches using Bonnie Hunter's Leaders and Enders method. Before I knew it I had used up all my background and had a drawer full of 9 patches. Back to Ben Franklin to find the background for the border. This quilt is designated for the Sutter Breast Cancer Auction, adapted from a Sandy Klopp design.

Lillian's Legacy

MADE BY: Lyn Ahboltin and Lillian Guesnon

QUILTED BY:  Virginia Page

A dear friend of 45 years, Lillian Guesnon, passed away and left this quilt unfinished. Her daughter asked if I would finish the quilt as none of the family were quilters. Of course I said yes, and received it with all of the blocks pinned to a flannel blanket that had been rolled and put in a bag. There was no pattern or instructions, so I put it together as she had it pinned to that blanket. I'm sure she looks down with a nod of approval.

Notes of Hope

Show #1010

MADE BY: Jane Haworth

QUILTED BY:  Jane Haworth

Within the letters of this quilt are photos of the "Notes of Hope" attached to the rails of the Foresthill Bridge. These were put there by a lady in Auburn who organized a group to make them and attach in an attempt to give people another way out. I wanted to use these bright and cheery notes to get across this message 'Don't Jump', which is in one of the notes.

Linda Collins organized a 9 patch block exchange with quilters from the US and Australia in January 2020. Each of us made 225 (or more) blocks and shipped them off in May to others in our group. Due to pandemic craziness, blocks coming from Australia took a long time to arrive by post. Once all the blocks were here, the assembly was quick and fun! Inspired by the book by Leah Zieber and Linda Collins: Treasure Hunt - Quilts Inspired by Antique Finds.

This was an internet Block of the Month using the “EZ paper-piecing system” and our own fabrics. EZ....not! There were 6-8 complicated blocks every month. All the fabrics were from my stash, and I love the pansies and like how it turned out. The quilting was a challenge - I like about half of the quilting. The rest - not so much, but it was a learning experience for me.

A double mystery quilt retreat with Linda Ballard. Linda stretched us all with this one. We all brought light and dark fabric squares and then shared them. The result is a scrappy quilt with fabrics from my quilting buddies. This was the first Linda Ballard retreat without my Mom (who thoroughly enjoyed our Linda Ballard retreats). I shared fabrics from Mom’s stash so we all have a piece of her in our quilts.

I bought this kit for my birthday April 2008, cut it out, then put it aside for 12 years. I was fearful of the applique in the center, but after taking a Discovery Day class (Illusions) I knew I could do it! At last I have the quilt I fell in love with so long ago on my bed.
